Yesterday we had our latest doctors appointment. They had what they call a clinic. This is where we had 3 appointments with all 3 doctors that have been seeing Joshua come together and discuss what they see going on and what needs to happen next.
First we had the dentist walk in. He said that everything is looking pretty good and that Andria had been doing an amazing job at keeping his teeth clean (I can’t even start to say how hard of a worker and how amazing of a mom Andria is). He has some teeth growing in the wrong places that we will have to deal with but the dentist said that he will have another surgery for sure and that when he does he will take care of getting the teeth out.
Second we met with the Speech Therapist. This is one of the top guys in the country and has done an amazing job with Joshua. He still doesn’t think that the soft palate is long enough so he thinks we will have to do another operation here soon. He says that he is very happy with how Joshua is trying to talk but he doesn’t hear the sounds getting any better. This is a sign that his palate is not long enough.
Third we saw the Surgeon. This guy is also one of the best in the country as well. I asked him what the deal was and why it has been so difficult. He said that Joshua has been a difficult case. On the outside everything looks pretty easy but that on the inside there hasn’t been enough material to work with. He said that it was like trying to fit a trampoline with a dollar bill, there is only so much stretching that you can do. On the next surgery the Doctor said that he will take some flesh from his throat and graft it into his palate so that he will be able to speak. Everyone says that the goal is that he be able to speak normally before 5.
So what is next?
The doctor wants us to take 3 months of speech therapy before doing a procedure on him where they put a tube up his nose to be able to look down on his palate. He says that they will do this while he is awake. This will hurt but it will make him cry and so that will let them see exactly what is going on and what is working and what is not. At that point they will tell us when we need to do the surgery so that they can correct it. After the surgery they will want to do constant follow ups again to make sure that everything is like it needs to be.
God is good, through all of this we have watched God do some amazing things. We have grown, we have gotten closer to God. Please pray for us that God will continue to bring himself glory through it all.
